THE CHARACTER
Tobias Mordecai Walker was the eldest of three boys born into an average middle class muggle family. His parents both worked for a living and there was no family business to be had; not that they needed one. One could say that he was a normal, average boy up until the age of five. At that age no one noticed a change per se, except in his behavior. But for Toby everything had changed. Strange things were happening around him more and more frequently; he could make things move with his mind, light things on fire when he was angry, and even make himself levitate a few inches off the ground to reach things.
This wasn't normal.
So Toby hid them asked for help instead of risking something coming to him magically. Any and all tactics to make sure his family didn't suddenly find out about his strangeness and abandon him.
Especially when, by the time he was ten, they had two other sons to replace him with.
Toby could only hide things for so long though before someone showed up with a letter inviting him to Hogwarts and laying it all out for them. It caused many arguments between his parents, not all of which Toby understood. He just knew that he was different and it was causing a rift in his family. His younger brothers were fascinated, of course, but Toby couldn't make any magic come for them when he himself was on pins and needles and eventually they lost interest. Left him alone.
And then, well, Tobias was off to Hogwarts.
He was sorted into Gryffindor, for his bravery the hat said. He wasn't feeling particularly brave, at any point.
The thing about a world of magic though? Everyone was different, and he wasn't sure how he felt about that. He lashed out, made some friends, they lashed out and - and -
They were bullies. The shoved and pushed and hexed. Used their words to stomp their classmates to the ground throughout his years at Hogwarts.
But where there was negativity there were also magical creatures, and Tobias quite enthusiastically fell in love with them and their differences where he couldn't appreciate his own and could be found staying after class or coming in extra to see the creatures. Eventually he got his own owl (which was another row between his parents). That he delighted in playing with and teaching. It didn't fix everything but Toby found something to build a genuine connection with.
The other class that caught his eye? Drawing. Not only did he absorb the lessons but he grew fascinated by the spells that made the illustrations move like they would naturally. While he hadn't practiced since he was a child he was told he had a natural ability and his professors encouraged him (when he wasn't in detention for the aforementioned bullying).
During breaks though, on the ones that he couldn't find a reason to stay things were ... Rough. All of it was rough. His youngest brother was a wizard as well and there, well, wasn't as much arguing now, was there? Toby resented his parents for it, knowing that he could never hate his youngest brother for it even if he was inclined to try. So late at night he whispered the secrets of the castle to his brothers, extolled its virtues and let them dream of it in a way that he had never been able to.
Eventually, Toby graduated.
He mellowed out some and took up a job at the Quibbler as an Illustrator and Photographer to make ends meet and move out of the family home altogether. His brothers he kept in contact with, his parents less so, but the situation at home was better without him. And if anything ever came up with his brothers, well, he'd made sure he had a spare room in his apartment.
