THE CHARACTER
Mikah was born to a wizard father and a muggle mother. Her father, Harrison, had always been fascinated with muggles—so much so that he was a muggle cultural anthropologist (you might know him from his texts, ”Muggles, Magic, and Religion” or ”The Foundations of Muggle Society”—but I digress). He met Mikah’s mother, Eliana, on the job while he was studying muggle culture, and as the story goes, he fell in love. Just six months after they met, they were married. And in another 9, they had their first son, Elias.
Harrison did, however, fail to mention one very important detail about himself to Eliana: that he was a wizard. Because of his fascination with muggle culture, and of course his own work in it, he assimilated into the muggle life easily, and didn't think it was a huge deal to keep that detail tucked away in the back of his mind. He didn't really mean to deceive anyone--it was just that he didn't think it was a particularly important detail to mention. But this fact came to light as soon as their son started showing sign of magic at around age 5--and as the bits and pieces of Harrison's identity was revealed, Eliana was... well, she felt deceived that Harrison would keep something so big, and so important--from her. It wasn't necessarily that she was unable to accept him--she saw it more as a breech of trust. It was then that the young couple’s marriage started falling apart: Eliana felt that their relationship was built upon a lie, and Harrison simply didn’t understand why it was “a big deal”.
They tried to make it work. “For the kids,” they both said, because by the time Eliana found out that Harrison was a part of the magical world, she was 4 month pregnant with Mikah. But still, nobody could deny that Eliana and Harrison’s marriage was falling apart. Eliana found herself unable to accept the differences between the two worlds, as she was constantly reminded with the snap of apparition when Harrison came home each day (Harrison started using magic in front of Eliana once the “secret” was out), or the levitating of a crayon by their son, who, at that age, could not yet control his magical abilities. Eliana loved her children, of course—but she felt alone in that she had to keep this secret about her magical family, and Harrison wasn't especially understanding or supportive. By the time Mikah was born, anyone could sense that their marriage was over. They continued to try to work it out for a few years after that, but Eliana broke off the marriage shortly before Mikah’s 5th birthday, and, even though there was some sort of custody agreement between Eliana and Harrison (something about Eliana having the kids over the summers), it wasn’t long before Eliana remarried and had a new family of her own, and slowly summers spent with mom became just… Christmases spent with mom, then every other Christmas… then hardly at all.
If you asked Mikah about all of this though, she would assure you that it’s really no big deal—she really hardly remembered ever having their mom truly around anyway. And although Harrison Leventhal wasn’t the world’s best father, he did try his best to raise his children after the divorce, and Mikah actually really liked her dad's laid back attitude and hands-off approach to parenting. Mikah also became extremely close to her brother, who she viewed as a role model and confidante. He was the one who taught her how to fly on a broom, and, since he started Hogwarts several years before she did, he gave her lots of advice (and even some very simple magic lessons) before she even started school.
At Hogwarts, Mikah was a Gryffindor—the hat had barely touched her head: it was an obvious decision. She had always been someone who listened to her heart over her head, and she was someone who cared deeply about those around her. Her friends might describe her as “energetic” or “eternally optimistic”—as it seemed like throughout her time at Hogwarts, not much could get her down, and she seemed to have a knack for cheering others up.
Mikah's professors at Hogwarts would probably describe her as “unfocused.” Her grades were fine, and she (mostly) tried in school, but she had always been more interested in fostering community and meaningful relationships with her peers rather than spending hours upon hours pouring over her schoolbooks. Plus... from a young age, she knew in her bones that she would one day become a professional quidditch player--even if she wasn't exactly born with the innate talent that many pro quidditch players have. While her brother, for example, made the Gryffindor quidditch team in his second year, and was scouted to play pro after graduation, it took Mikah several tryouts before she made the team as the Gryffindor seeker in her fifth year. Some would say that it speaks to her tenacity that she tried out so many times and wasn’t willing to give up—but it mostly speaks to her love for quidditch. Her professional career didn’t come easily either: Mikah was, unfortunately, not recruited to a team after Hogwarts—she spent several years after graduation living at home and playing on pre-professional quidditch teams before finally, finally getting a position as the Holyhead Harpies seeker when she was 25. She’s always felt like she’s got something to prove, but it wasn’t something that weighed too heavily on her heart—she’s always just out there, ready to play a good game, and she’s incredibly amazed and exhilarated at just the opportunity to spend her life doing something she loves, day in and day out.
