THE CHARACTER
PERSONALITY: Rules. Structure. Rigidity. Listening. Marcus is a man that got to where he was by following the rules. All of them. And he followed them because they worked. They saved people. Even if he didn't agree with them, he followed them. Because that is what was expected of him. Not everyone agrees with his stance on this. But he doesn't care what anyone else thinks. Because he was going to enforce the rules whether they like it or not.
With that rigidity comes repeated stories of success. As though Marcus were following a recipe to the letter, every single time. And lo and behold, every single time he opened that proverbial oven, out popped a perfect pie. So he driven by that success, but in his everyday life, and in a professional capacity. Ambition in the truest sense. He wants to live a life that his daughter would have been proud of.
But he's still a man full of regret. Longing for times that have long since passed. Regret over things he cannot change. Could not, in the most pivotal of moments, when it mattered the most. It's why he lives the life he does today. Maybe he had done this, or that, like someone had told him to, he wouldn't be leading the life he has now. But it's all for the best, he supposed.
LIKES: sushi, sad music, sunrises, forestry, soap operas, clear guidelines, purpose, mushrooms and various other fungi, cats, neatness, honesty, reflecting
DISLIKES: surprises, nighttime, poor hygiene, irrationality, people questioning his ambition or authority who have no right to
HISTORY: (TW - Child illness, passing)
If people knew Marcus 40 years ago, they wouldn't have recognized the man. He was flying by the seat of his pants, enjoying life. Or he thought he was enjoying life anyway. Marcus was born and raised in in Sweetwater, Texas. A small town - Marcus could count up to the town population in a few minutes. It's how he learned to count as a matter of fact.
His mother and father were big on education and proper upbringing, as it was something that they had never had themselves. They grew up in post-war America. Hard work and national fervor was really all they knew. So when little Marcus came along one muggy late summer night, they were determined to make sure he had all of the doors in life opened and ready for him to step through.
He went to a rinky dink public school until he was ready to attend Ilvermorny. His mother was the witch in the family, and his father kept as lightly abreast of all things magical as possible. Marcus had no prior history with magic before attending Ilvermorny, so it was quite an adjustment. But he made do. He was sorted into Horned Serpent, and proceeded to make many friends, some of which remained well throughout adulthood. But what really caught his eye was younger Lila Fox. Marcus had never been attracted to another human being before, until he met Ms. Fox. They became attached at the hip, making themselves official by 3rd year. She made him looser, and more free-spirited. He was able to relax. Nothing was too serious. He managed to still achieve fine marks at Ilvermorny, but he never broke his back for them.
On graduation, they both had decisions to make. What did they want to do in life? How could they retain their relationship? Marcus ended up applying and getting into MACUSA out of Ilvermorny, doing grunt work in oddities. Lila worked as a young potioneer, starting he own shop. And life was beautiful. They had each other, always. They eventually got married, and had a little girl - Maya. Maya was the apple of their eye. The perfect bow to wrap on their little family. They laughed and cried, and played. Watched movies, and got a pet dog named Squirrel. Marcus was happy enough bringing in grunt bucks, while Lila's potioneer business did alright itself. There was never a need for more. Until Maya got sick. Originally, they didn't listen. Probably little kids getting hurt doing whatever it is that they did. Nothing to worry about. Tummy aches here, headaches there. They told her not to worry about it. Even when Marcus' parents told them she should get a deeper look by a medical professional.
She was 9 when it got bad. Marcus and Lila having just turned 34 themselves. By then it was too late. The treatments were expensive. Too expensive to pay for out of pocket. But they did it anyway because that was their little girl. They paid and paid until the coffers were bone dry. And Maya's illness didn't care how much money was thrown at it. And 1 day before her 10th birthday, it claimed her life.
Marcus and Lila were lost. Like two aimless souls drifting about. Their daughter was gonna, like she had been some misty vision, or a fever dream that either could barely remember. Lila's business failed. Marcus' miniscule income was difficult for them both to live on under normal circumstances, but considering the fact that neither of them ate anymore, they were saving money.
One day, after coming home from work, Lila Jensen was gone. Clothes packed, pictures of Maya taken. All of them. Marcus had not one picture to remember his beloved daughter by. He sat alone in that house for 5 days. More specifically, in his bedroom for 5 days. It was over the holiday break. He did not have a very Merry Christmas.
When he emerged, he was different. He would achieve. He would do what his parents had instilled in him so many years ago. "Do things the right way Marcus. And life will treat you good." Life had not treated him good. So he must've been doing something wrong. He walked back into the office, and tried. He tried every day. He never quit, never gave up. Always did what was asked of him, and funnily enough, found himself rising throughout the ranks, until he himself was appointed head of the department. He looked down from his tower which he had climbed so high. But he still didn't see his daughter at the bottom. It would never bring her back. Nor his wife. But he knew that this was the right was to be. Everyone should be this way. Because then, he could've afforded another treatment. Or a different treatment altogether. Or he could've taken her to a specialist. Anything. If you listen.. if you really listen, and do what you're supposed to from the beginning, then maybe you won't have to suffer.
