Every six months the thestrals needed a checkup. It was also the first time that Suspiria had been selected to do it as her journey today started by apparation from London to Hogsmeade. A long trip at the best of times but the winters in this part of the world took it out of you. Perhaps it was just her imagination that it did feel even colder than normal. She shivered when she landed and on the walk up the snow gave way to her boots leaving deep tracks. In fact she had problems some of the way and was glad she’d taken the thigh high DM ype as there was enough snow to even hold up an acromatula (if it felt it even could be stopped by mere nature). It was also unusual that today was a Sunday and she didn't have that day off; she could always go to a tavern afterwards once she was finished here.
There was also another first today as Suspiria was returning to her school for the first time since she had graduated from Slytherin. The little round glasses she needed to wear didn’t look out of place along with her grey heavy travelling cloak and along with boots, jeans and a warm looking silver grey jumper she looked as if she’d fit in here; as if she was still a student that was off the clock.
This time was different; no felt different as she sensed a bit of tension while she waited for the grounds keeper. She had to be escorted and that didn’t sound like usual procedure. None of her co-workers had mentioned this before when they paid a visit to Hogwarts
She kept feeling this when she was collected and left in the forbidden forest. She knew where to go from here as she’d helped feed the thestrals as a student. She doubted they’d remember much of her and she could see them. She'd been at the deathbed of her aunt Calpurnia as a little girl.
Entering the paddock which was bathed in its usual twilight she knew she had to work fast. She’d lose the light in a few hours and then finding anything other than a rabbit hole would be quite difficult. You were as likely to break your ankle when you found one than to find a cute creature to pet.
Suspiria took a deep breathe that smoked in the cold and started with the first thestral she’d see. A foal in fact and she wouldn’t find them all today. They were off doing things but a decent enough sample size was here and that would show her if there was anything that needed worried about. She opened her backpack and left it on the ground near her for now. A visual check of the foal once she’d gained its trust showed this one was very healthy. Her right hand petted its scaly neck and she smiled a little. She loved these misunderstood creatures.
