THE CHARACTER
On paper, the marriage of Regina’s parents seemed like the stuff of fairytales. Her mother was the heiress of a prominent pureblood family in England. Her father, a hot-shot banker from the United States. It seemed to be the sort of marriage that would only serve to enhance the family’s prestige and net worth. After a few years, Regina was born, and shortly afterwards, things began to take a turn for the worst. Her father made a series of investments. In a normal economy, they may have been a sure thing. However, in the wake of the Dark Lord’s return, many of those investments would crumble to ash.
Regina was far too young to understand the implications. In fact, it was about the time that she began to attend school at Hogwarts. She vividly remembers the day she got her wand from Ollivander’s. She felt the tingle in her hand the moment she took hold of the wand: Vine, Dragon Heartstring, 11¼”. Regina’s attending Hogwarts was the first time she was away from her parents. She was sorted into Slytherin and made the most of her time at the school. She made friends, only a couple of those friendships lasted beyond her time at Hogwarts. At the same time, she also had her fair share of rivals as well.
As Regina’s time at school neared its end, she began to become aware of her family’s growing financial troubles. Her mother began to groom her, just as she’d been groomed, to capture the eye of a proper suitor. Certainly, there were boys at school that her mother encouraged her to pursue, and the few she found acceptable were either seeing someone else or gay. There may have been one boy that, through his annoying antics, at one point she felt she could tolerate, but his immaturity always found a way to douse her momentary infatuations.
Once she left Hogwarts, Regina did what she could for the sake of the family. She took a job at Madam Malkin’s. Her mother often said that her father had insisted on her taking a job in order to build character. Regina wasn’t satisfied to simply be a salesperson. She did her best to make it an experience, guiding the shoppe’s patrons to buy the attire that defined them. Eventually, Regina was able to convince her boss to sell magical cosmetics that she had created herself.
After a couple of years, Regina’s entertaining suitors paid off, as she captured the eye of a Grecian delegate to the International Confederation of Wizards, Silas Georgiou. It was a courtship that eventually led to a long engagement. It was a romance akin to a fairytale, with the exception of one single night of indiscretion. It was a night that for the most part was a blur, and one that Regina chose to never think of again. After all, she was very much in love with her fiancé, and learning of a night that didn’t mean anything would break Silas’ heart unnecessarily.
Regina was eventually married, and she and Silas would live between Britain and Greece for most of their marriage. In the first year of their marriage, she gave birth to their daughter, Demi. This family experienced happily ever-after first-hand until tragedy struck, and Silas contracted some strange virus and fell victim to it. The days where Regina would watch Silas play with Demi for hours on end were nothing more than distant memories. Shortly, after Silas’ death, Regina and Demi moved back to Britain so that they could be close to family.
While settling the affairs of Silas’ estate, she learned that most of his money had been set aside in trust for Demi. However, this was a unique trust, a blood trust. Only an heir of Silas’ blood would be able to access the vault. While attempting to access the vault, there appeared to be some error… an error that put Demi’s paternity in question for the first time. Regina explained it away insisting that Demi had recently been ill, and had opted to reserve accessing the vault until Demi’s eighteenth birthday. This meant that Regina would have to find a way to stretch whatever moneys she had saved until she could come up with a permanent solution.
Regina sold some of their assets and decided that it was time to get a job. Upon hearing of an opening at Hogwarts as the Potions Mistress, Regina promptly applied. She’d have lodgings for most of the year and could rent a cottage in Hogsmeade during the summers. She’d also be able to work on some sort of (potions) solution that would ultimately allow Demi to access what Silas intended for his daughter to have.
