THE CHARACTER
Calvin Graham Greystone, of Greystone fame. The Greystones are new to wealth. Calvin Greystone Sr, was a destitute young man. He didn't have job prospects, disposable income, or a burgeoning network of business contacts. But he did two unique things - a brilliant mind, and a desire to deliver those machinations of the world. So he started for free. Delivering small, uniquely designed magitech devices to wizards and witches throughout the land. Soon, his reputation grew. Wealthy patrons began conscripting his services. Eventually, he earned enough money to establish Greystone Industries, which has become the leading magitech company in the wizarding world. A product of hard work, and a desire to be the best of himself.
After he got his footing, and his company was proven, he and his wife Gloria began having children. The first of which, was Calvin Greystone Jr. Since his birth, Cal was always set apart from his peers. Not just because of who his father was - if his father taught him anything, it was that Greystone is just a name. It's action that put the respect there in the first place. So Cal knew he had to work hard. Harder than everyone else. If only to prove that the faith his father put in his namesake would not go to waste.
The Greystone siblings were able to find kinship amongst each other. There was Ainsley, Sheena, and Archie, in descending order of age. All 1 year apart. All destined for greatness, again not because of the name appended to their given one, rather what lie deep within them. They were entranced with the wizarding world growing up. Cal and Gloria were careful to detail what the wizarding world was like. How it differed from the muggle world, and how they could get the most out of both. Cal knew he would be a wizard. But he was unsure as to what he would do after he left Hogwarts. Follow in his father's footsteps? Or pursue a path that he himself forged?
Cal grew up closest with Sheena, who acted as his cheerleader, helping push him to wherever he desired to go. After getting to Hogwarts, and being sorted accordingly into Gryffindor, the possibilities truly opened up. People gravitated towards him. He was Mr. Popular. The sarcastic, yet affable young man got the most out of every interaction. As his siblings filtered through Hogwarts, they too became popular. People wanted to be associated with the Greystones. Life was good. Cal was a bright student, who earned top marks. They were expected to. Their parents would expect nothing less, of course. He even got the girl of his dreams. Lillia - a girl his own age, in Slytherin. Lillia nearly became his very reason for being. She was everything to Cal. She helped focus him when he became too enraptured in the limelight. He needed her. Not a hype man, but a focal point. He also had met Aaron, who would go on to be his best friend for years. You often could not find Cal alone at Hogwarts. He was either with Lillia, or Aaron. Often, you could find the three of them traversing the grounds together. Inseparable forever, to be sure.
Graduating from Hogwarts saw him essentially act as an intern to his father's role as CEO at Greystone Industries. The business had burgeoned from a humble startup, to an international conglomeration in short order. He had much to learn if he was to ever lead a business that size. He sat in on meetings, business deals, hirings and firings, R&D updates, and everything in between. It was a lot to absorb. His father paid him a meager salary. Enough that he was able to take care of himself, as he had moved out immediately following graduation. Lillia came with.
After 8 years of 80-hour weeks, no holidays off, and the trials and tribulations that come with being a pseudo-CEO, his time had come. His father decided to call it quits at 56. He said it was time to 'Sail the world with my love'. Calvin had to be ready. So at 26 years old, he took over the company. He was scared. So scared. Sheena reassured him. She helped run R&D those days. He knew he could count on her. And so he pressed on.
The first year was a bit rough around the edges. The global economy in general was rough, but Greystone endured. It's what they did. The second year came much easier. With that second year, also came his daughter - Ana. Lillia had given birth one day before Cal's birthday, on August 1st. It was the happiest Cal had ever been. Seeing that screaming banshee enter the world was his greatest joy. He doubted it would ever be bested.
The next couple of years were some of Cal's best. His love for Lillia was strong. His daughter, even stronger. Greystone Industries had tripled its revenue since he took over. They were now the preeminent name in magitechnology. His father was proud of him. His family loved him. His employees loved him. But on October 12th, 14 years ago, he was forever changed. Aaron. His best friend for decades. He had given Aaron a job at Greystone Industries 5 years ago. Why would he not? He would get to work with his best friend! But on October 12th, he learned of the repercussions of that action.
It was supposed to be cigars and whiskey. One of Cal's favorite pastimes. The whiskey was smooth. Caramel Turtle. It flowed like water. Cigars burned for hours. They were both drunk. Drunker than they should have been. He can't remember what prompted it. Or why Aaron brought it up. Maybe it was a guilty conscience, or maybe Aaron wanted to hurt Cal in some way.
'Cal.. I gotta tell you something buddy.'
Aaron had slept with Lillia, his then wife, 5 years ago. It coincided with her pregnancy. The news was earth-shattering, as expected. What was he supposed to do with this? Why would Aaron say this? Why would he do this? Why would Lillia do this? Had Cal done something wrong? Was Ana his? The questions swarmed his mind, darting in and out like angry attacking hornets. The confrontation was ugly. But no violence came of it. Aaron left in one piece. He confronted Lillia, who played dumb. Cal wasn't buying it. Aaron wouldn't just make that up. The next day, he took a paternity test that confirmed his worst fears. He couldn't confirm Ana was Aaron's child, but she certainly wasn't Cal's. Divorce proceedings followed.
Things go uglier. Lillia kept the Greystone name. Ana did as well. And they kept the luxurious house they resided in. That didn't kill Cal, he had many others. What did kill Cal, is the story that Lillia spun in her home about Cal. About how he left them high and dry because he grew bored of them. How he was a bad man, who didn't deserve the time of day. He never got to see her grow up. The beautiful young woman she would become. He backslid. Not professionally - he was too entrenched to let the business fail. But women came and went. He womanized from sun up to sundown. He never had to get flowers for someone. Or chocolate. He was Calvin Greystone. That was the only flex he ever needed. And he leaned on it hard. His image shifted into a billionaire playboy. He didn't mind the perception. They could deal with it. He was going to get what he came for.
Time passed. Wounds scarred. Two years prior, Ana, came barging into his office, accusing him of high treason. Tears in her eyes. Cal hadn't seen her in years. He almost wept himself. He told her the truth. Which she didn't believe until he offered to take Veritaserum (being rich has its privileges, even in the wizarding world). They are working on that relationship. Ana might not be his biological daughter, but he never stopped loving her at any point. Recently, he was granted an incredible assistant in PARKER MURPHY . The first person to tell him he was an idiot, and correct his work in the same day. That intrigued him greatly. But just how much can he push her buttons? That remains to be seen.
