THE CHARACTER
Johnny Nomano was born in Los Angeles, California originally, to parents of Igbo descent. Upon arrival to the United States, they changed their last name from Nnamani, to Nomano, as they had felt that assimilation, or as close as they could get to the idea of it would be best for their children. Johnny's life would have been largely unchanged regardless of the impact of changing his last name. His parents never had to push him in such a way that motivated him to be 'better'. He cared about what he cared about, and not much else. Luckily, those things in life that he turned out to care about, turned out to be fruitful. School, quidditch, and fitness. Socialization.. well that was one aspect of his life that wasn't up to snuff. But that was alright for Johnny. He was a quiet kid - and that extended into his older adolescent years as well. But as long as he had his passions, it would all be okay. His parents were the ones who helped facilitate those passions. He could remember watching several quidditch matches in his youth. It all fascinated him. He watched as his parents would become more and more animated as matches went on. Cheering, sneering, and everything in between. It excited Johnny too. And he knew he could be great at it.
At Ilvermorny, he was sorted into Wampus. It confused him at first. He was told Wampus was for warriors. The shy and introverted Johnny didn't feel like a warrior, so much as he looked like one. But he wasn't going to argue with the selection. He absorbed wisdom. It was kind of his thing.
Immediately, he gravitated towards qudditch at the school. The Wampus team was tough. They were all large and strong. Or at least seemed that way. But Johnny had a love for the game. And he wasn't a small kid himself. All Johnny could do was his best. And his best is what he did - and he didn't make it. That first year, he was cut. This was common practice. He was best suited to play beater, and he had fierce competition in older kids. He didn't have a chance. But instead of letting it define him, he worked. He put in the effort to become great, so that he could eventually make the team. He practiced in his free time with the other students who didn't make the team. It took time. A lot of hours. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears. But when year two rolled around, he had done it. He had made the team as the first beater substitute. He was ecstatic. But the work was just beginning. Practice with the bigger kids was brutal. Moreso than the previous practicing with the other kids that were cut. They put him through the ringer. But with Wampus, it was always born out of the spirit of competition. A fervor for greatness and glory. So when he was knocked off of his broom, both literally and figuratively, they were always help him back on it. And Johnny never forgot that.
As the years when by, it became clear the Johnny had a special talent. He was especially adept at keeping his team clean of the bludgers. Wampus reached a point where they hardly lost. It wasn't all Johnny, obviously. But he was a large enough component to be sure. Graduation came and went, and there was nothing he wanted more than to be a professional quidditch player. He got his chance again immediately, as a reserve beater for the NY Wolves. The quiet and reserved Johnny came to life on the pitch - but with professional player came fans. At first they came slowly. Interested at new blood on the roster. Then, as time went on, Johnny began to gain notoriety. At 22, he became a recurring starter for the Wolves, and his fandom grew. 'Johnny Beats', the kids would call him.
New York was his home, he had decided. He had grown comfortable. His play was prospering, and he was able to live in a relatively insular environment without fear of unsolicited routine changes. At 24, he finally received his first call up to the US national team. His parents were even fortunate enough to attend. It was a beautiful moment during a beautiful time. The spotlight mostly rested on the other players, and their flashier positions. Johnny was okay with that. He would take second fiddle - hell even third, when it came to the limelight.
Ever since, Johnny has mostly kept to himself, as he had always done. Life has yet to truly test him in any meaningful ways. He still plays quidditch at a high level, and is proud to be a career Wolf, and US team member. It remained to be seen whether that would change. But for now, as long as he can hang out with Bobbi, his beater mate, and play the game he loves, he is set.
