THE CHARACTER
Blonde hair, blue eyes, and a drawl that could melt even the coldest of hearts. Put em all together, and you would have a decent start on Sydney Harrison.
Born on a warm sunny day to the wife of a small town preacher, Sydney had the childhood one would expect. Family first, church second, everything else third. Everything was yes ma’am, no sir, please and thank you. Life was going smooth, and all was quiet and normal.
Until it was’t anymore.
Gowing up in such a religious and close knit family, you can imagine the shock when the first letter arrived informing her parents that she was…different. They didn’t want to believe it at first, that their little angel was magical. She had always had some quirks but they just wrote it off as her just being a little different. They ignored it, hoping that it would all just blow over. Which it would have, had Sydney not managed to get her hands on one of them. She had always heard stories of magic and witches, but always in such a negative light. To find out that she was this…thing that her family was so against? It was a lot for a child to handle.
Her family handled it even worse, at first refusing to let her even consider going. They were more concerned about what it would do to their reputation than anything. After all, the daughter of the most well respected preacher in the town? That would have been disastrous. To Sydney’s advantage though, she was always quite clever, even as a child. So you can imagine her parents surprise when she threatened to tell EVERYONE about the letters, unless they let her go. Once the initial shock wore off, her parents quickly agreed. They played it off as her being sent to a very private school, which in all honesty WASN’T too far of a lie.
Life at Ilvermorny was a complete and total culture shock. To go from a small town in the south where most people looked quite similar, to a school full of magical beings from all around the country…Syd had a bit of a tough time adjusting. Especially as a muggleborn with no prior knowledge or training. Thankfully there were obviously a number of other muggleborns there, and she quickly found herself happier than ever.
The time spent away from the school was easily the low points of her life after that though. Her family barely spoke to her, only really to keep up appearances when people were around. After a while, they were quite content to let her stay with the friends she had made. After all, she couldn’t cause problems if she wasn’t around.
If she hadn’t already been through enough massive life changes, the world decided to throw her yet another curveball, on her 18th birthday no less. Most people when they turned 18, got a car, or some sort of extra special present. After all, it was the time that you could start being considered an adult. It started like any other birthday, with a quiet breakfast and plans to go to church. Had to keep up appearances after all. As they gathered around after the service, one of the congregation members asked Sydney if she had any plans for the rest of the day. She nodded, and responded how she was going out to dinner with her girlfriend. Which normally wouldn’t matter, but the daughter of the preacher, dating another girl? It was like she had killed someone, the way her family reacted. “It was bad enough finding out you were a filthy witch…” her mother screamed, before realizing what she had just admitted to out loud. The craziest part of it all, was that she hadn’t even meant it like that. It was just a friend who was a girl. The last thing she remembered from that day, was her father yelling at her to get her stuff packed and to leave out of their lives forever.
So she did.
Having to basically start a new life is hard enough, but thankfully she had made enough friends to get her started down her new path. One that would take her to dozens of different states, couches and futons galore. She made it work though, and for the first time in her life…she was free. Free to do what she pleased, work the jobs she wanted, date who she wanted to date. For the first time in her life, she didn’t have the fear that came with being the Preachers Daughter.
Even with that newfound freedom, she still had issues shedding her old, shy country girl self. She could fake it for a small while, but more often than not something would trigger that fight or flight response, and all she knew was to flee.
That kind of toxic mixture of fear and freedom, was why at age 23 she decided it was time for yet another major life change. Not just a move to a different city, or different state…but an entirely different country. She knew from her time in school that the UK had quite an impressive Wizarding community, so with the money she had saved up she decided to take a chance on herself and make the trip across the pond.
