THE CHARACTER
BIOGRAPHY:
You know, sometimes you're just a Greek lad called Demokritos, or something, born in the year 565 BCE to a well respected magical family. All you want do is (have some fun) serve in the state army, take arrows to the knee, slather yourself in perfumed olive oil, and die a very honorable death.
Other times, you just get suckerpunched by a vampire in some forest on the way home from a battle and everything goes to pot. Suddenly you're outliving everybody, going on rampages, using battlegrounds as buffets, and not cooking your human meat. It's just how the cookie crumbles, really.
After that, what was Austin (not his given name, but we'll gloss over that) to do but just start wandering, joining wars as a mercenary, making wine, and generally doing whatever he felt like? It didn't matter anyway. His life became a nihilistic blur of centuries. Years would pass and he'd kill time by involving himself in human squabbles that he would, somehow and usually unwittingly, ruin. If you squint, countless blunders throughout the last few thousand years can be attributed to Austin's dumbass hands getting all in history's delicate pie. Leonidas I falling at The Hot Gates? Probably at least partially his bad. Someone dropped a torch on the Lighthouse at Alexandria? I'm not saying it was him, but he sure didn't stop it from happening. It's unknown how many problems were directly his fault, but he was present for enough that eventually coincidence becomes pattern.
Everything outward about Austin now is a lie. His clothes are modern, his accent is whatever he wants it to be, and his name has changed more times than he can count. Mostly out of necessity to stay under the radar, but partially for fun. Every hundred years or so he changes his name to spice things up, usually throwing a few joke aliases in for good measure.
He took a job as an archaeologist with the British Museum because he thought it would be funny. Austin loves nothing more than going on digs and watching his colleagues search for months in the wrong locations. Very funny to him. He changes careers and locations every few years so nobody notices his youthful appearance is more than just good health, so he could job hop at any point.
Austin was not exceptionally talented at magic from a young age. His parents expected him to be at least useful and, with no formal education available in the olden days, trained him as best they could. Once Austin flooded one too many crops, it became apparent that his true talents were more in non-magical combat than trying to perform small miracles for the village. He was much more adept with a sword and spear than he was with levitation. Some magic here and there kept him alive through some skirmishes, but it wasn’t his go-to in battle. That said, time changes a man. A few thousand years of practice has left him fairly talented, if he does say so himself. Austin still prefers to use his hands for most things, finding magic easier to hide over the years if he didn’t use it so casually, but needs must and all that.
PERSONALITY:
Austin can be a man of contradictions. He's approachable but aloof, friendly but harsh, honest in his words but living an elaborate lie. He finds humans fascinating but, unless he's formed an attachment to certain people, he doesn't care much for their troubles. In many ways, what Austin projects to the world is nothing more than a meticulously crafted person suit. One he's been wearing so long he doesn't always know which parts of him are fabricated to sell the lie.
He has a laid-back, friendly quality that makes him fun to spend time with, but there is an arrogance that lies right beneath the surface. It isn't so much that he thinks vampires are better than humans, because he knows very well that they are not (and honestly doesn’t fancy spending time around the youths these days), but more that the years he's spent in the world have given him a certain condescending quality. He gets very bored of petty human squabbling and doesn't care enough anymore to hide it.
He does a lot of things spur of the moment because they look fun and tends to not have much regard for collateral damage. Austin's got a good heart and can be very kind and loving, but it's hidden beneath 2500 years worth of sediment. He tries not to get too attached to people, after living long enough to see entire bloodlines of humans he cared about die out, but sometimes people do needle their way into his life. The mementos of people he’s loved are hidden in his basement, kept around for a night of quiet introspection every hundred years or so.
