THE CHARACTER
Kane Byrne - born in Waterford, Ireland after his sister Sally was born two years prior. Halfblooded, his mom was the magical one, with dad more or less left in the dark until Sally got her Hogwarts acceptance letter. Up through that point though, Kane had a lovely childhood. He depended on his older sister for quite a bit. Despite his name meaning 'little warrior', he was anything but. And Sally always felt so safe. Skinned knee? No probably, she got him cleaned up. Hungry? She got him a snack. It was easy to fall into a pattern. And he didn't really find himself until he got his own letter to become a wizard.
Kane was lost in that two-year period prior to his own Hogwarts attendance. He hadn't really made any friends nearby. They were all Sally's. And when she left, seemingly, so did they. That was okay though. He was content drawing, or hanging around his mother and father. It just seemed natural. It's what he knew. He no longer spoke or smiled much. The days were long. Too long. His only solace came in the summer when Sally came home. But even then, it seemed to be over all too fast. And he was alone again.
When he got his own letter to Hogwarts, he cried. He could hardly contain his excitement. He would get to see Sally again! And everything would be okay. And he would learn new things, and it would go back to the way it was before. Except.. it didn't. Kane and Sally arrived at Hogwarts together. Kane was sorted appropriately - Hufflepuff, surprising no one. But then he saw it. Sally hadn't..replaced him per se. But she had her own little set of friends now. And she looked happy. And he would still get to see her sometimes, right? Kane, even at his young age, knew this would be a transformative experience. And so he would make the most of it.
It actually didn't take him long to make his first friend - Ivy, who would go on to become his best friend. The one who, somehow, saw the light in Kane that the world needed. And slowly but surely, he smiled, and laughed, and told jokes that made his fellow students cackle with glee. Smiling felt good. He still got to see his sister, just as he expected. And year by year, he grew within himself to blossom into something he never dreamed he would be. Until dad died.
He never really experienced loss before. Except for losing Sally to Hogwarts, but that wasn't real loss. His dad was gone forever. His dad was a great man. And he wasn't there. It wasn't fair. He would never hear that hearty, bellowing laugh again. He would never hear, "Kane my boy, what is the day going to bring you?" He would never see the look of pride, knowing how much he loved his children again. It was over. Sally and Kane relied on each other quite a bit during that time. It was messy. Ivy played a role too. Without those two, he wasn't sure how he would've made it out. But he did. Somehow, some way.
Growing through his time at Hogwarts, he identified the positive impact his schooling had on him. It meant a lot. He tried to go out of his way to help others when they needed it. He was a bit of a goofball with his professors, but he meant well. He took to magical history quite well. While his sister focused on the future, and divination, Kane was more interested in what had been done, and why, so that it may or may not be repeated. Many students complained about Cuthbert Binns, and his teaching style. That much couldn't be helped, Kane assumed. He was a ghost after all. But he did feel it could use some sprucing up. And so, he began to tutor for the class, essentially becoming a LARPer by way of education. At first, people were a touch off put but his..effervescence. But as time went on, he began to have more and more students approach him for his unique tutoring style. He later learned that some of them weren't even in the class - they just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. That made him feel good.
After Hogwarts, he briefly became a magical historian, alongside his best friend Ivy. That was fun enough, to be sure. Though, once he heard that Mr. Binns had stopped showing up to teach magical history, he couldn't resist. He threw his hat into the ring. He never expected to get it. Not in a million years. But before he knew it, he was getting ready to deliver his first lesson plan for a new crop of students. And at first, he was scared. Did he teach like Cuthbert? Or should he teach as he tutored? Was that allowed? Would he get in trouble? But he remembered what Ivy said - 'Kane, never let anyone dull that shine. Not even you.'
And so he threw on his cape, monocle, and fake petit handlebar mustache, just as the first-years came pouring into his first class, putting on his best ringmaster impression.
"Welcome, welcome! Come one, come all to the wacky and wonderful world of history!"
Boy, do I have surprises for you all.
