THE CHARACTER
There are some things that just happen, in a way that feels destined. Like your every dream is coming true. Like growing up absolutely mad for Quidditch and begging your parents for tickets to every match close enough (and getting to sit in box seats because well, they could afford it). Growing up with trainers and coaches to help you learn how to ride a broom to teach you the ins and outs of Quidditch, even after you started at Ilvermorny. Anything to make their little girl happy, anything to polish up the family name. It's no wonder she made the house team. It's no wonder she went pro. It's no wonder she made the national team.
The same could be said for the muggle boy who lived down the hill, with his freckles and dimpled cheeks. The one that she played with every summer even after she went off to Ilvermony (the one she shared her first kiss with). They were sweethearts and it was adorable, to walk through town fingers interlocked, hands swinging. They were sweethearts. It's no wonder they stayed together after they graduated. No wonder she told him about the magical world. No wonder he proposed and they got married. And no wonder, when the time came, they had two wonderful daughters.
But it is also no wonder that when she was ambitious and so tied to her career she couldn't let go for even a moment that things began to slip. Injuries from careless maneuvers she knew better than to try, penalties, more and more time away from home. She was living her dream, soaring through the skies, scoring point after point just like she had watched the pros do as a kid. Pushing herself harder and faster to improve, keep up, and do better. To earn her place on the team every day. They said she was a model for a good work ethic, that she was a good role model.
It's no wonder he left.
By the time things well and truly fell apart (behind the scenes) Natalia was 32 years old. It was the first year that she had made the US National Team, as a reserve. In all those fourteen years of marriage, two daughters, and a white picket fence she spent maybe half of that time at home. She loved her daughters and read to them as often as she could. Spent more time with her husband. Spent even more time on the pitch. So those fourteen years ended in heartbreak.
The next year was … something else. She didn't put up much of a fight, how could she when she still loved the boy with the freckles and dimples? She got visitation rights, gave up the white picket fence, and tried to carry on with her life. That first year dragged her through the mud. More time spent in bars and on the bench than in the rest of her life combined, but eventually, she pulled herself back onto the broom. In some ways, she made her peace with it, but mostly she lives with the heavy yoke of regret on her shoulders.
These days she still sees her ex but every year they grow further apart. In some ways, the wound heals. Other times, they fall into bed together again. She does what she can, but sometimes nothing is enough. Off the pitch or on it.
She's on the National Team now, not a reserve either but a starter.
Somedays that doesn't feel like as much of a win as it should.
