Harry Potter:"Do you really think there's going to be a war, Sirius?"
Sirius Black: "It… feels like it did before."
TURN ON THE LIGHT is a Post- Potter roleplay that takes place twenty-five years after the Second Wizarding War.
We welcome canon and original characters in this (currently) sandbox style roleplay.
It had been a whirlwind 24 hours for Cody Kaleta, and he still wasn't fully sure if everything had actually happened or if it had been some sort of fever dream. It had started with him being invited to a Ministry party since he had done some of the artwork on the invitations and banners. He was easily out of place there, which was quickly pointed out by another attendee.
Krys Robin, the single most intriguing person Cody had ever met. She was very quick to point out that he was a bit out of place, also remembering that he was a bit of a vandal back in his Hogwarts days. It was both terrifying and impressive how matter of fact she was and her memory, it was just unfortunate that the conversation had gotten cut short by the discovery of a dead body swinging.
Most of everything after that was a blur, he knew he met some other Government people and such but all he could remember was the sounds of the screams, and the comical nature of the body. It was a first for him, and he was ok if he never saw another dead body (as unlikely as that was).
So, as was the case whenever something happened that soured his mood, Cody did what any rational person in his situation would do.
Candy.
Honeydukes was a favorite store of his, though he had to admit their selection had been dwindling as of late. It was a shame, as the place had such history. He made his way into the shop, his eyes scanning for something that would lift his mood.

Antonia had been placing an order with her supplier – smaller than last week’s due to falling demand – when the young man walked in. The shop had already been open four hours but he was only her second customer of the day.
Lately her dwindling customer base had been keeping Tonia up at night and she had yet to figure out what to do to turn things around, but it also made her appreciate her regulars more.
So she put the order form aside and turned her full attention on him, smiling in greeting. Today she would make an effort to talk to him and learn his name; as much as she liked to keep to herself building relationships with customers was a good business move. It wouldn’t solve all her problems but if it made just one person want to keep visiting her shop it was worth trying.
“Welcome,” she said brightly, more cheerful than she really felt, “Let me know if you need any assistance.”
As his eyes began to browse the shelves, Cody quickly realized that he had absolutely no idea what exactly he was looking for. He had kind of just one-track minded himself into wanting something sweet, without actually putting any thought into it. Typical Kaleta though, act first think second.
He heard the worker speaking to him, and he turned to face her with a smile. "Unless you have a way of figuring out what it is I want, without ME actually knowing what I want." he said with a chuckle, a warm inviting smile on his face. "I'm the king of indecision so coming in here without a plan wasn't my smartest move."
At least she seemed friendly, which made shopping a bit easier. Cody was definitely the type to strike up a conversation with strangers, which wasn't always welcomed. "Any recommendations for lifting someones mood after a....well, after a not so great night?"

Engage with the customers
Antonia mirrored the man’s smile, leaving her spot behind the counter and moving closer. “Sounds like you’re needing to take our quiz, ‘What Sweet Are You?’,” she joked, giving a small chuckle.
Be relatable
She came to stand next the young man. “I get like that too. Not with sweets usually but I have a bit of a weakness for crisps. I’ve often ended up leaving the shop empty handed because I couldn’t decide which flavor to get.” Tonia followed her words with a small, sheepish smile. It wasn’t a lie, but it felt like one. She hadn’t popped over to the shop for something as trivial as snacks since before. Nowadays she had most of what she needed delivered, only braving the shops when she knew they wouldn’t be busy.
Tonia glanced up at the nearest shelf, thinking of what might suit this man’s tastes without knowing anything about him. He didn’t strike her as a licorice type of guy, or a fan of mint candy.
She didn’t need to think long, the man letting out that he needed something that would lift his mood, which instantly drew her mind to chocolate. It was the best candy for it.
Now that the man had pointed it out, she could sense the sadness about him. It made her want to reach out and try to take some of that sadness away. She was all too familiar with the feeling herself. But she didn’t know the man; asking what was troubling him would probably be too forward.
She hummed, tapping her chin. “I think I know just the thing!" Tonia hurried over to a tall shelf, the last shelf kept well stocked, and reached for a bright orange box with tiny music notes printed on the surface.
Smiling, she carried it over to the young man and opened the lid. It revealed five chocolate hamsters that immediately stood up and began to sing acapella, each one with its own voice type. It was one of her best creations.
"Here," she said, "These little fellas might cheer you up! They stop singing when you close the lid." The box was one of the more expensive items sold at Honeydukes due to how much work it took to get the spell just right but she would give him a generous discount if he wanted it. "It's half off."
Being an artist was just something that Cody knew to do. He could tell that the woman in front of him had that same kind of knowledge when it came to running Honeydukes. "Well even as indecisive as I can be, I promise I won't be leaving empty handed." he said with a chuckle. Likely he would buy more than he could eat himself, and have to share it with whoever he could. Not a bad thing though, after all who didn't like delicious sweets?
When he told her what he was looking for, he watched as she took a few moments to think. He could see the wheels turning as her eyes darted between a few different products. The shelves were oddly empty, which was slightly disheartening but shortages were definitely a thing.
She decided on a product, and when she opened it and explained what it was his eyes widened. "That may be one of the coolest things I've ever seen! Did you come up with that yourself??" he asked excitedly. He had never heard of it before, so it had to be an original creation. She mentioned it being half off, and he shook his head. "No way, something that cool deserves full price. I'll take three if you have enough." he said without hesitation. Discounts were cool, but when it was something original like that, as a fellow artist he knew what went into stuff like that. "And before you try to argue, I insist. The artist in me won't allow otherwise." he said with a cheeky grin.

The young man assured her that he would be buying something, but Tonia was happy he had stopped by at all. She gave him a small smile in response and went to find something that might suit his fancy.
His reaction when she showed him the singing chocolates made her feel a surge of pride for her work. "Oh. I... yes." Tonia didn't know quite how to respond, overtaken by sudden shyness. "Thank you," she settled on, lips curling into a soft smile.
"Not everything in here is my own design, though," she was quick to add, not wanting to take all the credit for the assortment of sweets found at Honeydukes. "About 45 percent." The rest she purchased from wholesalers.
She had been planning on reducing her dependency on wholesalers by introducing more of her own designs to the shop's selection, but then her life got turned upside down. Now she had more time to experiment, but not enough customers to fund it. Still she carried on making more, finding personal enjoyment in challenging herself and trying to come up with new, fun ways to experience candy. Seeing the young man so impressed by something she had made was further motivation to continue. He was even willing to pay full price.
"Are you sure? she asked, brows raised. "Unfortunately this is the last box, but you can place an order if you like? You can get different animals." If he was ordering two more boxes then she was going to give him a discount, whether he wanted to or not, as thanks for his purchase.
Tonia took a moment to assess the man, eyes traveling from his shoulders to his face. The air of sadness that he had walked in with seemed to have lessened, voice sounding more upbeat. She commented on it before she could stop herself, unable to let it rest until she knew he was all right. "Feeling a bit better, dear?"
