THE CHARACTER
Diego can come off a bit like a big Labrador retriever. He’s excitable, positive, friendly, and would be so happy if you took him on a walk. He can be serious when necessary, usually about Quidditch or defending his friends, but his typical mode is all smiles. He’s just happy to be there.
Diego was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, to a Mexican father and Italian-American mother, smack dab in the middle of five siblings. Two elder sisters, a younger sister, and a baby brother. It was a full house but Diego always had someone to play with, so he couldn’t complain too much. He still did, of course, but y’know. Growing up, Diego would spend the summers with his paternal grandparents in Guadalajara. Family was important to his father, who made sure his children knew their extended families and didn’t forget their culture. Diego was mostly in it for the menudo, if he’s honest. At eleven, he received his letter to attend Ilvermorny, where he was sorted into Thunderbird.
The lad always had a particular affinity for his grandfather (and namesake), DANTE 'DOC' RIZZO . As a kid he’d trail after the man like a puppy, dutifully absorbing all he could about potions. Whether Diego had a natural interest in the field or just wanted to share something with his grandfather, we’ll never know. At this point, the two are so intertwined that Diego can’t look at a cauldron without fond memories of his grandfather passionately explaining brewing processes. Potions was one of the only classes in which Diego really excelled. He did serviceable work (if we’re generous) in most other subjects, even doing well in Defence Against the Dark Arts, but Potions was where he shined academically and always loved writing Doc about what he'd brewed recently.
Unlike his grandfather, however, potions would never be his greatest love. That was reserved for Quidditch. He made starter as a Chaser in his 5th year after spending a few semesters happily on the bench as a reserve, with hopes of being drafted by a team after graduation. And he was! Not a first round pick, mind you, but not too shabby. Diego soon learned that there was a big difference between making starter on a school team and starting a professional one. He got close in his rookie season before taking a particularly nasty hit from a Bludger that sidelined him for the rest of the season. He bounced around teams for a few years before finally landing at the Wolves, still in the reserves but at least with a shot at starting if he works hard enough. Diego doesn’t particularly mind, though. As long as he’s able to be around Quidditch and a team he likes, he’s just happy to play when he can. Which is why, when the opportunity arose, Diego jumped at the chance to act as “ball boy” for the US National Team. He supposes his official title is Assistant Equipment Manager, or whatever, but he’s never really looked at his paycheck. He does it as a part time gig when the Wolves aren’t playing (his playtime reaches its highest levels when the big guns are released for a National Team match) and is just thrilled to be included.
Amortentia: Honeysuckle, limes, and teakwood.
