THE CHARACTER
Jace was born outside Falmouth, England, the elder of fraternal twins. His father came from a pureblood family, though his parents were killed and he became estranged from the rest of the family, aside from a sister, so Jace has no particular loyalty to any other Blackwoods. His mother was from a large Scottish-American wizarding family that split themselves almost equally between the UK and US, giving Jace a healthy attachment to both regions. By the time Jace and his sister were born, the family consisted of his parents, a maternal half-brother already off to Hogwarts, a paternal half-sister, and a gaggle of assorted family members who doted on the children constantly. His aunt Pru was especially fond of the little ones and usually came to visit with sweets that would send Jace absolutely flying around the house. Eventually, more children joined the household, leaving Jace sitting somewhere in the middle.
Due to his parent’s work as Cursebreakers, Jace and his siblings spent much of their upbringing in various parts of the world. Borneo, Greece, Mexico, Cambodia, Peru, Myanmar, Egypt, Morocco. While they remained based in England, any time his parents had the opportunity to move the kids around the world for a few months, they would. This, combined with the fact that the kids were homeschooled until eleven and that his parents were almost pathologically adverse to other people, meant that Jace grew up primarily socializing with family. Which was fine, in retrospect, since the extended family was big enough to be able to easily field at least two Quidditch teams and have some absolutely outstanding weekend barbecues. Jace didn’t want for socialization as a child, but his lack of it became apparent as he grew older. He spent more time around fish than he did people he wasn’t related to, frankly. Jace wasn’t a wild animal, gnashing his teeth and snarling at other kids, but he also wasn’t particularly interested in them. In his first few months at Hogwarts, Jace was known to simply leave conversations he wasn’t interested in and did not seek out the company of his classmates. Instead, he spent his free time alone or with his sisters. Jace was personable enough to be well-liked, with a natural goofball charm that offset his garbage interpersonal skills, but he was not known for bonding in the Slytherin common room.
Hogwarts, for Jace, was not the fantastical wonderland it was for some of his schoolmates. He did not particularly like trading in his freedom to travel and learn what he wanted for a structured school schedule, stuck in one place. Sure, learning to use magic was great and he took a particular liking to Defence Against the Dark Arts and Ancient Runes, but he would have rather been out exploring. Jace got detention for skipping classes more often than not and only took attendance more seriously midway through he school career, when he needed to keep his grades up to stay on the Quidditch team.
Jace discovered his love of Quidditch at a young age, as it was almost required in his family to take some sort of interest in the sport. His mother’s family was heavily invested in the Quidditch world. She only played briefly, but a few family members had long professional careers that made gameday loyalties a precarious situation. When the family wasn’t traveling, they were at matches with an impressionable young Jace often given a backstage pass. He particularly idolized his “uncle” Chandler, a Chaser for Ballycastle, and loved nothing more than when the man would put him on his broom for a quick zoom around the sky.
As soon as he could try out for the Quidditch team, he did. It took a few tries, but he eventually made it onto the Slytherin house team as a reserve. The next year, a wave of players graduated and Jace secured a starting position. During big games, the whole family would be watching from the stands, with the professional players amongst them causing a bit of a dust-up that Jace always found humorous. Jace was drafted by Peru’s Tarapoto Tree-skimmers after graduation, an offer he readily accepted as he was ready to get back out of the UK after seven years cooped up in Scotland. After 5 happy years with the team, Jace took a season off to travel and spend time with his family. He returned to Quidditch a year later, signing on with his hometown Falmouth Falcons team, which he considers to be quite the honor.
Personality wise, Jace has telltale sprinklings of both his parents’ influence. Charismatic and adventurous with a goofy grin and lust for life, but with a strong sarcastic streak and a distinct lack of tact. He doesn’t like loud noises or big crowds when he isn’t at a Quidditch match, and is much more likely to spend a Friday night at home or in a quiet pub than out soaking up the nightlife. He’ll do charity events and is good with fans and the press but he’d much rather be home reading or at his parent’s for Sunday dinner, and he doesn’t mind saying so. “What are your plans to celebrate,” reporters will ask. “Dad’s making Shepherd's Pie,” he’ll respond.
When he isn’t playing or training, Jace spends as much time traveling as he can. He’s been known to take off on some adventure with just a backpack, journal, and camera, and disappear into the void for weeks on end. Occasionally someone will get a letter as a sign of life as he leaves behind the world’s sketchiest trail of breadcrumbs. Sometimes he thinks about just retiring to go live amongst the howler monkeys and lounge on a beach, maybe work as a humble fisherman, for the rest of his life, but the love of the game always brings him scuttling back in the end.
Amortentia: Saltwater, coconut with lime, and leather.
