"Well, just River Adelinde, I think you're pretty great myself." Always would, really, no matter what feelings his mind threw at him. From the way River studied and talked about all of the magical creatures that he had seen on any given day to the way that he talked about things in general. All the way to the way that River wrote and shared that knowledge with everyone around him. Even Charlie couldn't manage that too well every day, no matter how passionate about dragons that he may be. He just wasn't the same as River, and he was ok with that because that was what made River River.
Charlie blinked, not sure how to respond to support his friend no matter how his heart wrenched. He ran his fingers over the dragon egg in his hands for a moment while he thought before glancing back up to watch River, "Oh, well, good for her?" If that was what River wanted to hear, Charlie wasn't sure. "Maybe you should ask her and pry? If that's what you guys usually do, maybe do what's the most … normal?" That sounded kind of right, not that Charlie had any experience with the subject, but just acting normal might help? What was normal?
"Oh, I'm sure if I asked she'd make space at the table every day!" His mum was just like that, always with the door open. It was something he'd always loved about her, always having somewhere to come home to no matter what. Though he could use a few less comments about his hair. But at the end of the day he loved her no matter what, and knew that she'd quite easily pull up a chair for his best friend without a question if Charlie so much as said the word.

"Thanks, Charlie." He responded without a second guess. So honest, so shy and humble, even relieved, so very River Adelinde. River, like a good portion of usually quiet people out there, had the nasty habit of seeing the best in everyone. Everyone was the greatest person to ever exist and he tried to make them feel as such. But when he looked in the mirror those rose colored glasses were stripped away and he could only see... him. Nothing remarkable. A failure in a lot of regards. But in this moment, Charlie was saying he was great. Charlie Weasley was one of the greatest beings, human or magical, to ever exist. So if he said it... it must be true.
"That's the thing. I don't know what's appropriate. I know how we used to be. How we always were. But that's changed now. A lot has changed." He marveled both at his current predicament but also the egg. "I mean, I'm not normal so how should I know what's normal. Even for us." It was then he looked up and caught Charlie's gaze, a smile forming. One that was definitely too lovey dovey for who it was for. "For Fee and I, I mean." River, in a rare moment of self awareness, caught himself and quickly looked away clearing his throat and covering his mouth to hide it.
"I would like being invited over to the Weasleys for supper to be normal though." River noted, his sweet smile returning as he bobbled his head a bit from the other side of the egg. "It used to be!" Then things changed, as they often did when one got married (for one reason or another). "I ought to swing by soon I think." He stated, suddenly turning very serious and straightening where he stood actually appearing like an adult (and what the back of the book art illustrated on his novels).

"Well, I'm sure Fee will tell you if she thinks that you're overstepping." Charlie could only imagine, and maybe that would be for the best. For them to figure it out through trial and error. He shrugged, ruffling his hair awkwardly with the other while keeping a firm grip on the egg, "Probably not fun. Don't think she'd ever hate you for working to figure it out, though." Fee just didn't seem like the type. Especially if River was as earnest about trying as he was about … literally everything else. He returned River's smile easily, and gave another shrug, "I'm sure you guys will be able to figure something out." He couldn't imagine anything different, honestly.
"We'd love to have you for dinner, whenever you want."Everyday* Charlie's traitorous mind sang, but he couldn't keep River all to himself like that, could he? "I'm sure it'll be normal whenever you stop by." With a fair bit of ribbing from his siblings surely. "You should. We've missed having you, I think."

"Boy, will she." River sighed with a bit of a nervous smile. His once fiance was a lot of marvelous things, but someone who keeps her opinions to herself was *not* one of them and River was forever grateful for that. She kept him in line. She kept them all in line. They would be lost without her. River knew he would always want to keep Fiona in his life in any capacity even if it wasn't romantically.
"I don't know. I know that she, we, I... we... right, we ended things and that things would be different, I guess I just wasn't ready for how different that actually was." He admitted, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly with the palm of his hand. Was he sweating? It couldn't be the baby dragon's fault - it hadn't even hatched yet! Perhaps Charlie's working hut needed a muggle air conditioner or a decent breeze charm. His hand moved to reach for his wand in his coat pocket but stopped. No. It was probably all in his head.
"Truly?" At the mention of supper at the Weasley's River's heart sang in unison with the ginger before him for about a dozen reasons. "I have been missing your mum's roast. Oh, and the potatoes. Oh, and the peppers and onions. Oh! And the gravy of course. Even the salad. The pie. The sweets. The leftovers." It was hard to wipe the grin off of his face so he didn't even try. He just continued to smile like the dope that he was. "All of it." He settled on that summary with a blush, smile faltering ever so slightly. "You don't think she would mind? Perhaps the teeniest of heads ups? I could send an owl... or learn how to use a muggle telly-phoney." As bright as he was, muggle appliances often baffled and yet fascinated him. He actually collected muggle items and had a room at his large place dedicated to any interesting muggle contraption that he found. Fee had hated it only because it was such a beast to keep organized with the way that he kept adding onto it.
"How's everybody? Percy, Bill, Ron, Ginny, George?..." Had he left anyone out? He didn't think so. "Oh! And the nieces and nephews. How are they? Jack says hi by the way so... hi!"

Charlie wanted to be able to just throw his arm over River's shoulder and tell him that nothing was different. To make it better with a few words, or maybe a wave of his wand. All things that were beyond him. Instead, Charlie shuffled his feet a bit and sighed, "It's hard now, but I'm sure you guys will figure it out." Charlie couldn't imagine them staying at odds, or so awkward they couldn't talk to each other. Things would get better.
"Absolutely." Charlie agreed easily, a warm amused fondness suffusing through him as River rattled on about all the things he missed about their signature Weasley family dinners. He let himself get distracted, just a bit, by the rhythm of River's voice. It helped him avoid thinking about the feelings that talking to River about something as simple as dinner engendered in him. Things best left to the wayside. "Ah, I think only dad knows how to use the telly-phoney, though I doubt she'd mind an owl." Charlie only tripped a little over the unfamiliar word that he was sure only his father knew the meaning of.
"Everyone's doing good. Percy is Percy, and mum still chases Bill and I around with shears on occasion." For all the hardship that they had had before everything was going suspiciously smoothly at the moment. "The nieces and nephews, oh they're awesome little things." Truly the most chaotic little gremlins, he adored them. "Tell Jack I said hi," Charlie replied, giving a little wave - as if Jack could actually see it.

"She'll figure it out." River sheepishly corrected the redhead with a lopsided, goofy little grin. A burn at his own expense but also a compliment to Fiona's tenacity and groundedness. She had a good head on her shoulders and not just because of the pretty face also located on it. Fiona was a smart cookie. Now, River was also smart - but he was book smart. Book smart and life smart were two very different things. Fiona, as luck would have it (and River considered himself very lucky to consider her a friend ex-lover), was both.
"Fee will inform me once the terms have been set and I'll go along with it." Again, not a burn on her but an honest admission. River, like Charlie Weasley, had big time Golden Retriever energy. He only ever wanted to see his friends, or complete strangers, relentlessly happy so if someone told him to sit, he sat, if someone told him to jump he didn't ask 'how high' but kept jumping until he reached the height that they wanted. But that was River and he had been the same way since at school at Hogwarts.
There was something about Charlie's smile that, no matter how nervous or anxious or worked up River was, put him at ease. His smile, his big body that could even protect dragons, his kind face. Or maybe it was just Charlie all together that River liked not just his smile. Which is why he found himself parroting back the confirmation with a cheesy smile all his own. He couldn't help it. "Absolutely." River found it easy to get along with most anyone in any circumstance, even if they didn't necessarily like or want to get along with him.
"Your dad, that's right! Telephone. Yeah! Yeah! It's like a howler but less mad and in real time usually, right?" River, like Charlie, didn't have much experience with muggle devices but he was a bit obsessed with them when he found or saw them on his travels. He didn't acknowledge Charlie's mispronunciation. He didn't want to make the other man feel awkward but also it didn't bother River any either way. They both knew what they were referring to so what did it matter if Charlie said it differently? Tomato/tomahto. Telephone/Telephoney. Same thing!
River grinned from ear to ear, beaming, as Charlie recounted his family life. River only grew up with one older sister, who he loved immensely (and his nephew!), but he still wished that he came from a big family with big brothers, little sisters, and everything in between. When at the Weasley's when he wasn't chatting up a storm with Charlie's mother he was watching everything go down with a large smile and wide eyes. Forever intrigued and entranced.
"Oh I will." He nodded firmly as if the gesture was legally binding like signing a contract. "Isn't having nephews the best? I've got one, Jack obviously, and he has one little sister... Like me and my sister. Well, my sister and I... Sorta..." The magizoologist blushed and shoved his hands into his pockets sheepishly swaying a bit on his heels. "She also says hi. I mean, not actually, I didn't tell her I was seeing you but she would if I had. Surprised she didn't assume really I'm always... seeing you..." He finished the last words quietly, realizing how odd and silly they sounded, looking to the wooden floor of the hut.

"Well, even if she lets you know it'll still be progress!" Charlie just couldn't wait until his friends were back on the right page. Properly talking to each other again. Without any of the awkwardness. After everything, Charlie just wanted what was best for them. What was best for his friends, what would most easily have a grin coming to River's face. Because that was what mattered most, wasn't it? As long as they were happy. Made each other happy.
"Yes! Like a howler but not quite." He grinned, though all the phone calls he had ever been on had been as loud as howlers. Even he had been nearly as loud as a howler on one before. Apparently you weren't supposed to do that but how could you be sure the telephone could hear you if you weren't? It was like whenever his mum sent out a howler, you had to be just that extra bit louder to make sure the message went through right. Probably.
"They really are the best. They grow like weeds too, always have something new going on." Charlie would know, he had a garden full of the little buggers and he adores them. They were all getting older now though, less of a need or interest in their fantastic uncle Charlie now that they had their own little interests. His dragons, while still cool, weren't as cool as they used to be. But they were growing up.
"Huh, true." And Charlie grinned because there was nothing that he would rather be doing than seeing River, "Well even if she didn't exactly? Say hi this time, tell her I said hi!" River's sister really was wonderful Charlie though, though he of course had his own favorite of the siblings, for all that you weren't meant to play favorites. That probably didn't count for adults though.

"I guess so." River perked up a little bit at the thought. He did tend to cling to hope and possible positive which Charlie would be well aware of as one of his longest and dearest friends. Perhaps that was his intention. Either way, River was grateful for the distraction. "Any kind of progress would be appreciated." He sighed in relief, a bit of pink forming in his cheeks. "I do miss our talks. All three of us. Has she reached out to you? At all?" River wanted that but at the same time he didn't. He wasn't sure why. Still, the constant curiosity in him didn't allow him to play close to the chest. He asked his questions hoping for answers whether he liked them or not.
"Jack did ask how Rose, Hugo, and everybody were doing. Maybe he can join me when I swing by, if that's okay with your mom of course." Naturally, Mrs. Weasley would welcome it. She enjoyed having a full house and feeding them all, but still it was the polite thing to act like you would be an inconvenience. River did it every time even when she practically dragged him by the ear over the burrow's threshold (and that was as a grown man!). "Jack mentioned maybe going into our line of work and my sister just about strangled me via looking glass. She's usually so sweet but I think her thinking of Jack with me is different than him out on her own. I hope she doesn't worry that much about me... Though... I wonder if people do..." He was digressing. He should probably stop that. Dangerous territory and all, and just horribly sad to think about.
"Do you think I ought to call or owl?" River asked out of the blue, eyes wide and genuinely interested in Charlie's input. "Fee... Not your mother... Though if she wanted me to, I could certainly do that too." Whatever Mrs. Weasley wanted, she got. She had that kind of power and when miffed was certainly scarier than any other magical beast that the magizoologist had run into.
