THE CHARACTER
Didiane Silvia Maisonet was illegitimate, a bastard; her parents unmarried with no hopes to ever wed. Her father (Teo) was a member of a distant yet no less notable branch of the Malfoy family, the Maisonets, in France while her mother was simply a naive young social climber. Didi would never know for certain whether her mother had loved her father, the woman never said, though as she grew older she doubted any feelings were ever returned.
So into this world Cecily Roche brought forth a squalling infant, a grasp for status and a desperate attempt to tie herself to a man who wouldn't have her. Cecily was spurned by her lover as soon as she attempted to present the babe to him and was left disoriented with a child that never would have existed had she known this would be the outcome.
Cecily Roche steeled herself and set out to make their lives hell. Marriage would have been the easy option.
Cecily had thought, once upon a dream, that marriage and a child with her beau would mean *everything*. Making a name for her family, raising their name alongside that of the Maisonets, spending the rest of her life as a socialite attending balls on the arm of her husband. To see those dreams crumble to dust in her palms and to have them leave behind such a lasting reminder, she hadn't been able to let that go. In her inability to accept her reality and her desperation to hold onto lost dreams she dragged her family's name through the mud and made a laughing stock of them all.
A notable amount of the first year of Didi's life was spent in courtrooms. While the question of her paternity was solved with a simple potion the negotiations for her support dragged on. Didi has no distinct memory of the courtroom but with the stories and whispers she has heard of her mother's behavior she is rather glad for that. Eventually the tides turned against the Maisonets; since the fallout of the war there had been no great love for the pureblood families involved no matter how old, even in France.
Suffice to say, Didi didn't grow up poor.
While not a mansion, Didi grew up in quite the stately home set on a good bit of land in the English countryside - her mother having fled France once she had things settled. Didi spent a significant amount of time by herself growing up; sometimes due to her own choosing, sometimes due to her mother's disinterest.
Left to her own devices Didi did just about everything that she wasn't supposed to. She spent days rooting around in a nearby creek to return home covered head to toe in mud only to sneak in through her window and showered herself off in the ensuite so her mother was none the wiser. Other days she simply wandered the sparse forest that surrounded their home, seeing how far she could get before the sun began to set. She sometimes spent time climbing and hanging from trees, testing just how high she could go before the branches truly started to shudder under her weight.
It was no wonder she eventually asked her mother for her own broom.
Her mother, ever looking to pick up a status symbol, gifted Didi a top of the line broom, highly recommended by the shop's owner. Didi's maiden voyage was jerky and abrupt and ended in less than ten minutes with a broken arm. The first time she was ever grounded, too.
Didi's father's side of the family expressed little interest in her growing up past making sure the galleons were sent on time each month. Any balls that Cecily managed to worm their way into they were met with disdainful looks and unending whispers sent their way. No matter how many they attended it was never a pleasant experience.
The only time they took true notice of her was just before she was due to receive her owl to attend Hogwarts. A formal invitation for Didiane to visit their ancestral home for lessons in etiquette. Upon her arrival her mother was turned away at the door and her grandmother met her. As soon as the woman laid eyes on Didi she made it abundantly clear that this was no acceptance nor award for the wrench that had put their family in this situation, she simply didn't want the girl to bring even more shame to their family name.
The lessons were something Didi would have easily described as torture then, and perhaps still would now. They continued at least yearly until she graduated.
Her time at Hogwarts was difficult to say the least; sorted into Slytherin where night on everyone knew about her situation it was worse than she would have anticipated. She was eventually let onto the Quidditch team rather begrudgingly for her skill, for the most part she was a social pariah. Most of Didi's time was spent in the library where tomfoolery wouldn't be tolerated. Keeping her head down as much as she could to avoid the barbs until she found her ways to fire back.
Didi eventually found her voice much to the discomfort of her housemates and took great delight in repaying all the harassment they had dealt her. Many a student over the years complained about living with what was practically a Gryffindor. Those days she turned her music a little louder and sang along just a little more off tune.
As thick of a skin as she eventually grew, and as much as she learned how to hold her own, graduating Hogwarts was a relief. She spent the first year out of school working odd jobs and playing for Quidditch rec leagues, desperately hoping to be noticed. Eventually, she was offered a spot on the Hollyhead Harpies as their seeker. Didi happily accepted the position, eager to see what opportunities may lie ahead now that she doesn't have to worry so much about her past.
