THE CHARACTER
Garfield Horace Hyde, if his parents named him for the sophistication they hoped he might maintain they were incredibly off the mark. Garf's parents were well off, they had a generational family business that was thriving and an heir apparent to it - him. First born of the Hyde family with a sister a few years younger than him and the easy assumption would be that Garf would be the one to take over growing up. He went to a fancy private school, got to sit on a stool next to his father while they looked over the finances. It really was too bad his teachers frequently complained about his classroom disruptions, or that he almost always ended up rocking his stool sat next to his father so hard he tipped over.
So no, Garf wasn't fit to lead the family business into the next generation. In fact, it was almost a relief when his acceptance letter to Hogwarts came in the mail. Sure, when his parents learned that the terrorist attacks a few years back were actually witches and wizards they had some reservations but, with Garf's persistence and perhaps the fact that it was a boarding school with a good reputation, they decided to let him attend.
Off he went, off to Hogwarts.
Hogwarts was a pivotal feature in his life because magic, but there were just some things that it couldn't hold a candle too. Like that time on summer vacation he was out wandering around town with a few of his muggle friends and saw his first guitar. Garf was obsessed the moment he laid his hands on it, if not before. So, he pulled out the rest of his allowance for the summer and everything that he had managed to save over the school year and bought it.
His friends may have laughed at his first fumbling plucks of the strings and his parents when the saw just what he had brought home, but Garf was in love.
Nearly every spare moment he had he could be found strumming or looking over music books. Painfully teaching himself the chords and hoping something near decent came out. To the consternation of himself, and at the ribbing of his classmates, it was very clear to Garf that he wasn't the best by any means but eventually he got decent and better through constant practice and wheedling his parents into paying for a few lessons. By the time he graduated there was little question of what he would be doing for the rest of his life.
Garf was going to be a Rockstar.
Or, well, some sort of guitar strumming star. He hadn't been so sure at that point and his thoughts on the matter hadn't gotten much clearer as time went on. Garf wasn't a rising star or a pop hit by any means but at no point was he horrid. He played at parks, in the occasional bar, wherever he could make a few bucks. For a while there it was amazing, he bartended at one of the bars that let him play every once in a while and sure he lived with his parents but that was just temporary.
He was cool. Kind of.
Except it felt like he was spinning his wheels. Bartend, play a gig at a muggle bar or whatever magical bar would have him, go on dates, do whatever. Eventually he wanted more. Eventually he noticed that nothing was changing and he only saw one factor to change.
So, Garf gave himself a year to figure things out. He bartended only as much as he had to and took just about ever gig that got offered. Either he would prove to himself that he was able to live off his music or he wouldn't and he'd find a *shudder* proper job.
Funny how things changed in a year.
Not even a year later and he was left with a daughter from an ex short term girlfriend and figuring out how to be a father while looking for proper jobs. She said something about him being better equipped to raise her (he had his family, after all), and not being ready for her. Either way, Garf was left with his head spinning a new baby girl.
Eventually, he had a brand new job at the Ministry of Magic too.
It was just a grunt job but it was paid better than any other job he had in the past. He moved out, though he had a very impromptu split custody agreement with his parents, and spent a whole lot of time with his daughter. Garf got himself settled eventually and they had a stable life together. If he was a bit more careful in his romantic life in many ways, including who he brought home to his daughter, that was his own business.
But there wasn't much to save him from someone who rightfully wormed their way into his life. Antonia was someone he could see, well, he could see a hell of a lot of her in their future. She was someone who adored his little girl just as much as he did. None of his relationships had ever been quite like that. He's not sure if any of them have been anywhere near the same since.
Garf had known about the attack on her sister but he hadn't expected how she changed afterwards. He knew about the hatred for muggles, that's the kind of thing they learned about in History of Magic when they learned about the Second Wizarding War. He hadn't imagined it in someone so close to them, someone who probably should have met his parentswhoops. Their relationship lasted a grand total of eight more months and by then things were rough.
Afterwards? Yeah, Garf was heartbroken.
It took a while for them to settle back into their rhythms before she had come into their life, but they managed eventually. He had a four year old to raise and the rest of his life to figure out, whatever that meant. Garf dated from time to time but after ... everything well, he was slower to let people so deeply into their lives.
His little girl grew up, and he was eventually promoted to a Secretary in the Department of Cultural Affairs. He focused on getting more music into the lives of their youth, and sometimes he managed to even set up a gig or two for the nights that his parents could take his daughter.
Yes, his heart did stutter in his chest for a moment when he saw that Antonia had been arrested. He ignored it. The same as he would later when she was released.
Now, thirty-four years after his birth and he's at a comfortable place in his life, even if he isn't quite satisfied, with his daughter heading off for her first year at Hogwarts. Growing up. Now though, he has far more free time on his hands to figure out what to for with.
